Identifying Thought Distortions

Thought distortions are unhelpful patterns of thinking or beliefs that cause your brain to view reality inaccurately and usually more negatively than is actually true. These may have been a form of survival adaptation in our ancestors but in modern life, they can cause issues. There are many types of thought distortions but some common ones are: catastrophizing, black or white thinking, generalization, personalization, discounting the positive, and jumping to conclusions. These can all be identified with practice and then diffused by telling your brain they are not true and thinking of a more constructive statement to counter each one.
